Welcome to the National Fishing License Initiative (NFLI) web site.

We exist to promote the initiative through advertising, public presentations and the solicitation of our lawmakers in Washington DC.

Our goal is to see the initiative become law and the opportunity for all who enjoy freshwater sport fishing to be able to do so anywhere in our country ... Affordably.

So what is the NFLI? Simply, it is a win-win proposal in that all who like to fish would be allowed to visit any state in the union and, abiding by that states regulations and guidelines, enjoy as many freshwater fishing trips as they would like to. It would also provide an additional source of funding to your state Fish and Game as well as to all other states.

For an example, suppose you lived in New York and you were one of the 101,522 people who bought an out of state license in Connecticut, but you didn’t really want to fish in too many places other than New York and Connecticut. In that case, you might just purchase your New York license for  $19.00  and your $20.00 Connecticut license as you normally do.

But what would you do if you planned a great vacation with family and friends and wanted to fish several states? Today you would have to purchase multiple fishing licenses or not be able to fish in all the states you’d like to. It would be easy to spend $500.00 or more just on out of state license fees. See state fee here

Our proposal would offer a cost effective alternative. If you were licensed in your home state, you would be eligible to purchase the National License. For $110.50, you could fish any state in the Union so if, on your vacation to America’s west, you fished California  (7 days), Oregon (4 days) Washington (6 days) Nevada (4 days) Idaho (7 days) Utah (7 days) and Colorado ( 6 days) you would save over $300.00 Now consider the old guy at work who just retired. He and his wife not only love to fish, but they are one of the 20,000,000 RV enthusiasts who live in the US and they plan to spend months each year, traveling and fishing. Would a National License be important to them? You bet it would.

But how will your home state benefit? Well, US Fish and Game reviews more than 30,871,523 anglers bought licenses in 2000 while  6,745,571 non-resident licenses were sold. The truth is, most fishermen will still buy an out of state license or two so while the loss will be small for many others, an affordable National License will be very attractive and for each National License sold each state will receive $2.00. So if only 2 million National Licenses sold, that would equate to $4,000,000 each year for each and every state. Of our 2 million anglers with national licenses, how many would fish 50 states, or 40 states or even 30 states?  You can see where this will be a windfall to your state’s fish and game department. Under our proposal, each sales agent would receive $3.00 and US Fish and Wildlife Service would receive the remaining $7.50 to administer and manage the program.

HOWEVER in order to make this dream a reality we need your help. In fact without your participation, the initiative will go nowhere. We have identified several likely Congressmen who are most likely to sponsor the bill before the House of Representatives. The criteria we used to find these folks were factors like, do they personally enjoy fishing, size constituents, state demographics etc. In order to effectively lobby them to introduce the bill, it is imperative to have a HUGE database of folks who would contact their respective legislators requesting their support (vote). When we gather a sufficient database, we will petition these Congressmen and when the bill is introduced, we will then email everyone on list and request you flood congress with emails and letters seeking support. So please sign our visitors log now.

Also, your help is needed in spreading the word. Please tell everyone you can think of about the initiative.. point them toward this web site, the more the better. We need to advertise the initiative, really saturate the media with the word so people everywhere will hear of this effort. That takes money and you can also help there too. Any financial contributions you make will be greatly appreciated by many for years to come.
